ABOUT THE ART
Fireweed is a common "weed" in the Pacific northwest. It quickly moves into disturbed or burned areas. The flowers are a cheerful pink-purple and in autumn, the leaves turn a fire red. This "weed" also moves into areas that have been burned in the wetter parts of the northwest, including areas that have been clearcut and burned for replanting.
This fireweed in this image was growing along the road at Heather Meadows on the way to Artist's Point. It simply grew here in the roadway gravel where it met with the native alpine meadow plants. Soon the pods generated by the spent flowers will burst open with silky seeds that will be carried by the wind before the snow flies.
