I spend a lot of time in the wide open spaces of the desert and often find myself inspired as I drift into a fantasyland. Everything is connected, everything matters, things are always changing, evolving, in flux. Where the river bends offers a change in flow, a new direction, new hope, prospect, transformation, opportunity. Overtaken and inspired by this evolution and constant motion, I picture the sun and our beautiful lands, already in a courtship, reaching, uniting. Or a lone planet that wants to offer what it can to a barren land. Two entities from different worlds coming together, a heat and intensity so strong, melting, reaching. The vast and open desert often reminds me of a blank canvas...my imagination wanders, and I dream...what beauty that could be.
I shot the base photo of this piece a few days ago at Horseshoe Bend, by Page, Arizona (northwest corner of the state). If you ever get the chance, it is absolutely a wonder - the vast open desert and the beauty of this magnificent segment of where the Colorado River bends into the shape of a horseshoe. You can just feel the blessings of good luck wash over you. It is a beautiful sight to behold. -DM
