About this artwork

On the most recent episode of Always Making (episode 9) I went on a little bit of a tirade about people conservatives not understanding the first amendment in regards to the recent Chick-Fil-A controversy. If you’ve somehow missed this story, the owner of Chick-Fil-A made some anti-gay statements and has given a lot of money to groups aiming to stop same-sex marriage. In response, people have gotten angry and have started to boycott the fast food chain. This boycott has led some to exclaim that first amendment rights were being violated — most notably, Sarah Palin.

The first amendment absolutely gives Mr. Cathy the right to say whatever hateful things he wants. It doesn’t however free him from the consequences associated with those words. Believe it or not, Sarah, the first amendment doesn’t make criticizing someone’s opinion against the law. People getting offended by the things he said is not a violation of his rights. The first amendment DOES give those people the right to express there disagreement by protesting, boycotting, mocking, writing letters, and a number of other actions.

During my tirade on the podcast I was doing a goofy impression of someone thinking they were having their first amendment rights violated. I stated, “I’m not wrong, I’m freedom of speech!” Jonathan and I both laughed at how ridiculous the statement was, but decided it was a pretty accurate description of the mindset, poor-grammar and all.
