About this artwork

DIGITAL IMAGING By Victoria Benitez Mexican folk art, Day of the dead, Frida Kahlo, Black, White, woman, artist Frida Kahlo (1907-1954), Mexican Painter. DESIGN By Victoria Benitez, digital imaging, collage, , loteria, watermelon, red, Frida Kahlo, Mexican folk art. From 1926 until her death, the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo created striking, often shocking, images that reflected her turbulent life. Kahlo was one of four daughters born to a Hungarian-Jewish father and a mother of Spanish and Mexican Indian descent, in the Mexico City suburb of Coyoacán. Her pictures, mostly self-portraits and still lifes, were deliberately naive, filled with the bright colors and flattened forms of the Mexican folk art she loved. At 21, Kahlo fell in love with the Mexican muralist Diego Rivera. Kahlo enjoyed considerable success during the 1940s, but her reputation soared posthumously, beginning in the 1980s with the publication of numerous books about her work by feminist art historians and others. In the last two decades an explosion of Kahlo-inspired films, plays, calendars, and jewelry has transformed the artist into a veritable cult figure. Frida has being described as;”One of history’s grand diva...a tequila-slamming, dirty joke-telling smoker, bi-sexual that hobbled about her bohemian barrio in lavish indigenous dress and threw festive dinner parties for the likes of Leon Trotsky, Poet Pablo Neruda, Nelson Rockefeller, and her on-again, off-again husband, Muralist Diego Rivera” Today, more than half a century after her death her paintings worth more money than any other female artist. She is gone now... but her legacy will live on forever, VIVA LA FRIDA! Read More
