About this artwork
GE'EZ: is an ancient South Semitic language originated in the northern region of ancient Ethiopia and Eritrea in the Horn of Africa. It later became the official language of the Kingdom of Aksum and Ethiopian imperial court.
Ge'ez is written with its own alphabets of Ethiopic script or the Ge'ez abugida, also know as 'called Fidäl' meaning alphabet.
Today as a spoken language Ge'ez is still used only as the liturgical language of the Ethiopian ans Eritrean Church, however the Ge'ez script has been adapted to write the current official languages of Ethiopia and Eritrea, 'Amharic' and 'Tigrigna' respectively. Its also used by most other languages of Ethiopia.
The art work: 'Geez-Girl', design incorporates geez numbers ('ahaz') as used in a Clock (1-12) , the corresponding latin numbers and a simplified monochrome illustration of a symbolic 'Habesha' (Ethiopian and Eritrean) female portrait.
