ABOUT THE ART
In 2010, I decided to execute a long-term performance art piece by assuming the part-time identity of a possibly fictional, fabled street artist Robert Mutt. His name is inspired by the name R. Mutt which Marcel Duchamp signed his infamous urinal/fountain sculpture. By assuming my alter ego I could explore the possibilities of potentially controversial and explosive themes that my "highbrow" conceptual art pieces did not delve into.
These templates/drawings are the plans for stencils that Robert Mott uses for his undercover graffiti work. They are extremely political and point out the hypocrisy of both the left-wing and right-wing people.
His work addresses lots of issues ranging from government-sponsored torture to the use of disaster funds for public control by corporations to foreclosures to the corruption in the art market. He likes to provoke by delivering concise statements about humanity from cynical humor.
This series is presented in the Viewing Program of The Drawing Center.
