The iconic classic of Japanese woodblock art. The Great Wave Off Kanagawa (Kanagawa oki nami-ura or 神奈川沖浪裏) is the first block from a set of woodblocks called Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji created by Katsushika Hokusai (葛飾 北斎) in the late Edo period some time between 1830 and 1833. Notice Mount Fuji (Fujisan) in the background. The manned boats among the waves are oshiokuri-bune, which are fast boats, used to transport fish to the shore for sale.
