About this artwork
Both Buddhism and Hinduism teach that possessions are impermanent and the attachment of objects only causes future suffering. The Buddhist context of nirvanaa refers to the stillness of mind after the fires of desire, aversion, and delusion have been finally extinguished.
Americans are constantly buying more and more with the hope of satisfying temporary addictions. Objects are purchased and thrown away at a rapid rate which only leads to the need to consume more. The thrill of buying a new car only lasts for a short time. Eventually, the thrill wares off and the desire to buy a newer car returns. This behavior more closely resembles drug use rather than wealth.
In the bible, prophesies point to the destruction of the world. When a person believes that the world will be destroyed, they create a self fulfilling prophecy. Apathy toward damage to the earth rises because to them, the earth will be destroyed one day anyway. This leads to today's mindset that animals and natural resources are merely objects that are to be used as tools. The truth is that all life on this planet is connected and should be treated with respect. In respecting other forms of life, we are respecting ourselves. We are all one organism.
