About this artwork
One of 36 illustrations for the book "Taketakerau The Millennium Tree". Polynesian explorers find Aotearoa, sometime between 800 and 1000 AD. These intrepid navigators traversed the whole Pacific with the aid only of the stars and the flight-paths of migratory birds.
With this image I got as close to 'doing my thing' as I could, given the author's stylistic requirements. The stars below the horizon are not reflections - they are shining through the water.
When he arrived in New Zealand on the HMS Endeavour in 1769, Cook was amazed at the long waka or war canoes he found here - some of them almost as long as his own ship. In his log he expressed his respect for the abilities of the Polynesian navigators - high praise for one of the greatest navigators of all time!
