About this artwork
The shape of the island of Taiwan is just like a dolphin, if we can not to protect dolphins, then how can we protect about Taiwan?
The "Mother Sea-Goddess (Matsu) Fish" or the Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin Sousa chinesis is grey when born and develops grey-blue freckles during youth. It turns white or pink when fully mature, thus it's other popular name in Chinese meaning "white dolphin" (sometimes called pink dolphin). Local people from fishing villages have named the animal after Matsu, the Sea Goddess, perhaps as result of seeing the humpback dolphins most often around Matsu's birthday in March/April when the seas return to a calmer state.
Taiwan's pink dolphins (otherwise known as Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins, Matsu's Fish, or Chinese white dolphins) are resident along a narrow strip of waters off the west coast of Taiwan. They are so close to shore that they can be seen from the land. But being so close to the densely populated and heavily industrialized west coast also means that they are being subjected to toxic pollution, underwater noise, boat and net collisions and entanglement, land reclamation, and alteration of the estuaries that support rich ecosystems - and food. They are now listed as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List.
