ABOUT THE ART
This painting was begun in situ on the mountain, on a broken piece of hardboard I found under the Tararua Tramping Club ski hut, where we were staying.
All around these mountains in Tongariro National Park are cindery rock lava flows, sometimes bare and sometimes covered with a golden native tussock grass. And of course, snow in the winter. It is both beautiful and desolate. The whole area proved to be an ideal setting for the final stages of Peter Jackson's "The Lord of The Rings" movie trilogy - the location of Mordor and Mount Doom, the great volcano into which Frodo was instructed to throw the Ring, to save Middle Earth from the forces of evil.
