ABOUT THE ART
For my brother's 34th year, I am making and mailing him a postcard every week. I am calling this exercise "project 52." Inspiration for the postcards in project 52 come from my daily life. Sometimes they feature studies for paintings I'm working on, sometimes they depict scenes from my kitchen or bits of poetry that I've enjoyed recently. I'll continue to make some of the postcards available here.
In honor of the summer solstice, I made my brother a card inspired by Midsommar. My husband and I celebrate the Scandinavian festival every year with a bunch of friends. In fact, the party requires so much preparation that this card is a week late! The sun (inspired by a 19th Century Flammarion engraving) is circled with flowers, reminiscent of the flower crowns we don for the big night! I washed the original ink drawing with acrylic glazes in bold, warm hues for summer.
