ABOUT THE ART
Inspired by the havoc and horror apparent in the world, and referencing Ted Hughes poem 'The Crow'
The last words of the work
O littleblood, hiding from the mountains in the mountains
Wounded by stars and leaking shadow
Eating the medical earth.
O littleblood, little boneless little skinless
Ploughing with a linnet’s carcase
Reaping the wind and threshing the stones.
O littleblood, drumming in a cow’s skull
Dancing with a gnat’s feet
With an elephant’s nose with a crocodile’s tail.
Grown so wise grown so terrible
Sucking death’s mouldy tits.
Sit on my finger, sing in my ear, O littleblood.
The poems that comprise the work 'The Crow' was described as a 'vast, folk epic' by Hughes.
' God is having a nightmare. This hand/voice – this thing -
arrives at the moment he falls asleep and grabs him round
the throat, rushes him through the Universe, pushes him
beyond the stars and ploughs up the earth with his face
and throws him back into heaven. The moment he dozes off
this hand arrives and it all happens again, and he can’t
understand what there can be in his creation which is so
hostile… Eventually this voice/hand speaks.'
A riveting work.
