My favorite thing about 'The Hills' is its simplicity, in that it uses only one photograph: a close-up shot of an ice cube that was in my drink. It's a technique I use in virtually all my works, where I'll take one of my photos and reinvent it into something completely different and then use it in conjunction with other similar creations. But I think this is the first piece where the entire work uses only one photo.
Each primary element (the hills, the sun, and the background/sky) uses different crops from this same photo. The scene is intended to evoke the beauty of the warm, tranquil desert with its high sun and sun-drenched rolling hills or sand dunes, and I utilized various graphic design techniques and color treatments to get a warmer effect with orange and rust hues, but in reality, 'The Hills' is comprised of simply an ice cube. -DM
