ABOUT THE ART
This is an illustration of the Finnish fairy tale, 'The Little Mouse Princess', done in three vignettes with a decorative border. Completed in Photoshop, spring 2012.
'The Little Mouse Princess' is the tale of how a young man sets off into the forest to find a wife, but only succeeds in finding a mouse who offers to be courted by him. He begrudgingly agrees, not finding any alternative- and ends up discovering that this mouse is a princess, and more competent at being a wife than his brothers' wives! In the end, he agrees to take her to meet his family, after they have been wooed by the samples of craft the son has brought back to them- but the son's brother attacks her nut-carriage by kicking it into the river, and the little mouse drowns. The son mourns the passing of his fiance, but then a beautiful woman shows up- it's the mouse princess! Since the son showed that he could love her regardless of her outward appearance, the spell that had been cast upon her was broken, and she returned to her original human form.
