About this artwork
The Neanderthal, as we all know, was a predecessor of Homo sapiens. Ridpath's text from pp 293-294 (comparing this Neanderthal skull to the "Engis" skull): "Very different from this, however, is the skull described by Schaafhausen, which was taken from the cave of Neanderthal, near Dusseldorf, in Rhenish, Prussia. The latter is so exceedingly gross in its form and structure as to suggest, almost with the force of demonstration, a type of life but little above that of the beasts of the held. The skull is almost as flat and thick and receeding as that of a gorilla. No man of any existing race, even the most barbarous, has a skull at all comparable with the Neanderthal in its small capacity, outward-sloping occiput, and great thickness of bone. "The accompanying cut of an authentic cast will sufficiently illustrate the character of the skull under consideration."
