ABOUT THE ART
Mountain Hemlock (Tsuga mertensiana), may soon disappear from its southern-most range …the highest reaches of California’s Sierra Nevada, due to drought and a warming climate. Farther north, it grows a little lower in elevation but still in association with the timer line where heavy snowfields used to linger well into autumn, next to the blooming alpine meadows. In southeast Alaska, it grows at sea level in association with white birch trees.
This photo was taken at Heather Meadows in the state of Washington in the North Cascade Range. Here, it forms the dominant timberline tree where traditional snowfields and alpine meadows meet.
