Stunning work! What in the world type of ballpoint pen are you using?
Deactivated commented on February 2, 2013 3:49pm
I love it! :)
Caitlin Hackett commented on February 2, 2013 5:50pm
thanks everyone! @ Terry I used to use bic ballpoint pens, but a few years ago I was gifted a mont blanc ballpoint pen, it's refillable, I use the fine point refills, and they have an archival oil based ink
Animal Crew commented on February 2, 2013 6:36pm
wow - stunning!
Terry Fan commented on February 3, 2013 12:31am
Thanks for the info, Caitlin. I figured you must be using a fine point, but it's kind of amazing that you ever used Bics, fine point or not. The one time I tried using a Bic to draw something it kept splotching ink and I ended up with a smudgy mess.

Anyway, it's really cool how you achieve such subtle, refined, almost pencil-like shading techniques with a ballpoint, I'm in awe. A Mont Blanc has never been put to better use!

Wow, great work. Love the eyes.
Terry, not sure if you know that Caitlin also works super-duper-huge-scale:

thanks everyone! @Rachel, thanks! : ) I actually finally finished that big piece "time in captivity" for a show this month. @Terry, even my Mont Blanc can get ink globs, I keep a little scrap paper beside me that I consistently doodle on to get the excess ink of the point, and my fingers are always stained haha, but I love ballpoint despite the pains!
Terry Fan commented on February 4, 2013 5:32pm
@Rachel - I did actually know that based on this portrait photo I saw in a previous post and was amazed at the grand scale:

With something at those sizes certainly the resolution and line-work will look finer. However, this owl is one of her smaller pieces and there's still a remarkable amount of detail and refinement.

@ Caitlin - ah, well I'm encouraged to know that you found a way around this problem, thanks for the tip. I can see why you love the ballpoints so much considering your wonderful results, ink-stained fingers seem a small price to pay. :)
