Soul Tree Art

My name is Jen McCulloch and I am an artist, wife and mother of two boys living in Utah. I earned my degree in art from Weber State University in 2003, but It isn’t until recently that I have found the courage and time to pursue my passion and put it out into the world. I love making art! I find it very spiritual and healing and it is a way for me to express my love for nature. I choose to always be an explorer and creator of beauty and always be open to the unknown possibilities of life. The art that I create is mostly acrylic paintings. I use acrylic paint, pen, hand made paper, fabric, stamps and other mixed media to make a collage on canvas and wood. I also enjoy making custom hand crafted jewelry. I mostly make pendants using medal, shell or wood with my images of my art and inspirational messages encased in resin. Many of my paintings are landscapes using the earths elements. I use a lot of trees and spirals in my work of art which symbolizes growth, wisdom, strength and beauty. In many of my paintings the tree represents the human spirit and the connection between our inner soul, body and mind. Like a tree we have deep roots connecting us to the earths power and branches that connect us to the cosmos’ divine energy. When we are open to the life force that runs through us, it can help bring balance to our lives, help us evolve into our higher purpose and awaken our inner being. The spiral represents cosmic force, power of womanhood, The cycle of time and nature of life…birth, growth, death, rebirth. We are always evolving on this spiritual journey through the cycles of Life. I create a stitch like pattern in some of my pieces of art to represent everything in life being connected as one. Everything effects everything…our thoughts, beliefs and actions. I am now learning that if we chose to see the good and change our thoughts we can create a beautiful life and heal our self. I am really inspired by the Art Deco/Art Nouveau era, contemporary art and the style of Traditional Asian Art. I like to use a lot of small intricate design, glitter and shine in my work because if you pay attention to nature you can see it. Under the reflection of light that glitters off a lake, a sunset or a rain drop on a petal. To me it is spirit shinning through to us reminding us that there is more to life than what meets the eye. I enjoy playing with color and shapes on canvas, making lots of layers and watching my paintings evolve into something new. As well as making art I also love to be outdoors in the sunshine or under the moon. I enjoy hiking and camping. I love eating veggies, meditating and doing yoga daily as the sun rises to help me heal and feel good. I love to put my tunes on and dance, I enjoy traveling, decorating, flipping houses and reading inspirational books. I love music and festivals, pretty things, holidays and surprises. I get pleasure from simple things like sitting on my deck feeling sunshine on my face or snuggling with my boys. I am shy and keep to my self mostly. I dream of living on the Big Island of Hawaii and so that is what I paint. I love the ocean, the warmth, the big trees I can hug and exotic flowers and raw food. So maybe someday I can call it my home where I can raise my family in the healthy environment I choose. I feel our main purpose in life is to experience Joy and Growth. I am a dreamer and a creator and I believe that love can heal and I believe in possibility! My art is my passion and my teacher so I hope someday it will be for others as well.
