You've jealously stalked the Instagrams of the world's-coolest interiors, always feeling like your decor-game is lacking. How can you make your empty-box of a dorm into a bold individual statement? You know what you like, but you might not know how to refine that personality-power into making a room that looks totally put-together while screaming "you". Stylist Alex Merrell gives us some easy, designer-approved tips that will help transform your decorating dreams into reality. Roommates, keep up!
1. Find Your Vibe
Stepping into the dorm-life feels like having your own place for the first time, no one to tell you to clean up and better yet, no one to tell you how to decorate. But with all this newfound freedom, what if you're not sure where to start? Creating mood boards is a great way to gather ideas about what you like. Create a Pinterest board, an S6 Collection, or an old-school cut and paste collage. There's no wrong way to gather inspiration and now that you've got some independence, a mood-board will help you fully embrace your unique style.
2. Color Scheme
After you have a better idea of the vibe you're going for, the next step is to figure out colors to compliment. Find hues that work well together and try to stick to them when buying pieces to decorate. This will allow you to mix patterns and textures while keeping things cohesive. I like to keep bigger pieces in more neutral colors while adding the bolder items as pops!
One way to find and keep track of your color plan is to explore the paint swatch section at your local hardware store. Swatches are usually free and great for playing around to find the right combination while having a physical representation of your palette.
3. Focal Point
Okay, you've just entered your room. What do you want to look at first? Whatever that thing is (a painting, a favorite chair, a spacious window), make that your focal point. By nailing down a specific area that you want to draw attention to, you give yourself a built-in place to highlight your favorite art pieces, wall tapestries, and other bold items that will inevitably be eye-catching. College is just a fancy excuse to nap and sleep-in forever, which is why I made the focal point of this room the bed!
4. Art Done Right
You're in college, where the ultimate goal is being cool without it looking like you tried (okay, and graduating). Here's some tips that will help you display your art with an effortless eye for design.
- All art looks good around eye level, so start by planning to hang your pieces around this height.
- If you've got just a few pieces to display, remember that odd-numbered clusters almost always look good together.
- If maximalism is more your style, a gallery wall is guaranteed to do the trick. You can fill your walls with pics of your puppy, letters from your bff, and unique art that will definitely make your roommate jealous.
