With the holidays coming up, I imagine a lot of you will find yourselves waiting in long lines at airports or finding creative ways to stretch your legs during marathon road trips. I know life is supposed to be "about the journey" but let's be real, sometimes the journey just sucks. And as much as we love the the end destination (family, friends, FOOD) the getting-there-and-back can be make or break for how relaxing your trip will be. NY-based stylist, Brynn Watkins is always on the go; her and her husband, filmmaker Aaron Craig, just got back from the Maldives (which sounds like the name of some fancy French pastries, but is a chain of islands that is somehow even better than dessert). Here, she shares some of her tried and true travel tips to help you amp up that en route chill.
It seems like my husband and I are always on the road or in the air, traveling to destinations near and far. As much fun as this sounds, believe me, travel is not always a picnic. Travel can be draining, pretty darn exhausting, and sometimes, not fun. Luckily, with all these trips, I've discovered travel essentials which make the difference between a trip being totally rad or really bad. Since I'm all about helping you "boldly go where no man has gone" I'm sharing my "Holy Grail" of travel essentials today. I hope these help your trips run smoother!
1. Extra towels.
You never know what the towel situation will be where you're staying. If you're in a tropical or watery-wonderland area, it pays to pack a towel in case you find an unexpected swimming hole.
2. A travel mug.
If you're like me, you love your morning tea/coffee fix. I find it's handy to have your own spill-safe mug at the ready. This way, I get my caffeine and everyone is happy.
3. Little pouches to keep essentials.
Organization can be a pain, am I right? Little pouches for organizing essentials are such gems. I use them to sort toiletries and travel adapters.
4. Comfy sweatshirt for a chilly plane.
Always great to have on hand. Planes can be freezing, so I love to bundle up. Extra fluffy socks are a great idea too!
5. A charging phone case.
Sometimes, you don't have time or outlet access to charge your phone. It helps to have a self-charging phone case in a low-power pinch.
6. A tote bag to throw essentials in.
You have to put everything in something, so why not use a super-cute tote? I like this one because it has cute cacti on it. Makes me smile!
7. A laptop case.
This is an essential for keeping your computer safe (and you happy). I love this one because I can easily find it and take it out of my bag during long security lines. Ugh, you know the feeling!
8. Natural hand sanitizer.
Planes and other travel venues can be gross. I highly recommend you don't use tap water to even wash your hands, and definitely don't drink it! I like having a natural hand sanitizer on hand so I can keep feeling fresh on the way.
9. Tons of bottled water.
I avoid drinking water on planes or trains. Bring your own water bottles, it helps to keep hydrated on a long, dehydrating flight!
10. A sleep mask and ear plugs.
Great for tuning everything out so you can get your beauty sleep. These babies have been a game changer for me. I feel so much more rested after using them.
Travel will always bring surprises. Keep in mind this is all part of the journey. What stresses you today may be a laughable memory later. Don't melt down!
