Quick Product Update: Kids Clothing

Something is up on Society6.

Some of you have already noticed, while others have simply felt an unexplainable ripple in their day. That drop in cabin pressure is obviously the discontinuation of Kids and Baby Clothing on Society6.

This is a first for us and something we're pretty keen on.

After a year of producing children's apparel, we've made the call to discontinue the category in an effort to focus our mutual time, attention and resources on the products we feel are most aligned with our long-term goals.

You don't need to take any action for this to take affect. The options have been automatically removed from your shop and any purchases that were placed prior to discontinuation will still be fulfilled and earnings paid after the standard clearing cycle.

For us the loss of children's apparel represents a huge gain.

We've reinforced in ourselves that Society6 is not a mass-production factory interested in pushing your work on every possible product (hair scrunchies, anyone?).

We're a deliberate marketplace where the most talented artists and designers in the world make their work available on products for like-minded individuals looking for unique gear as an extension of their own creative expression.

And we're grateful for the honesty and support of our community in keeping that front and center.

There are new products on deck that we're very excited to share with you soon. Products very much aligned with our collective personal tastes that no other marketplace is offering.

Stay tuned for more updates and your feedback is of course always welcome in the comments below!

Think original products will be good, mark Society 6 out from the crowd.
Jade Deluxe commented on Saturday, February 14, 2015 9:58pm
Not happy about this at all. The baby onesies made the best baby shower gifts.
Hey Nice Stuff commented on Sunday, February 15, 2015 9:39am
WTF??!!!!! I had like 8 onesies in my cart I was going to buy for my baby girl due next month and am SOOOOO pissed that you dropped it. It's hard to find super fun and creative onesies. Bad call. Seriously.
Hey Nice Stuff commented on Sunday, February 15, 2015 9:43am
I'm sorry but I'm super bitter about this. Uh, no I don't want to buy a scrunchie with The Murrays on it- I wanted a f'en onesie. I'm so tempted to take my art work down from here and just never use the site again - that's how annoyed and unhappy I am.
Warwick Wonder Works commented on Sunday, February 15, 2015 9:49pm
You can't please everyone. Some will no doubt be upset; others don't design for that market, like me. Some things I'd like to see in products: bed pillows, table placemats, towels, double side printed t-shirts, car sunshades, and flags. Sitewise, I'd like to see a major revamping of the templates. I understand that the multi-product templates are designed to make it easy for beginners; however, this groups together some products that should really have separate templates. Perhaps you could design the multi-product templates with a check box for each type of product it is used for, and for products you don't want a particular design on, you could un-check it. Then if you wanted a different design for the products you un-checked, you could then check those options and un-check the others. It would be very helpful, for example, to have the shower curtain and duvet cover templates separate from the throw pillows and tote bags, due to the size difference involved. It also makes no sense to me to have mobile phone cases and greeting cards on the same template, even if they are the same format, as the two products call for very different designs: greeting cards usually call for text, and mobile phone cases/skins are usually more pictorial or abstract.
Lagoonartastic commented on Monday, February 16, 2015 6:34pm
What a pity!! These were the best baby shower gifts :(

Canis Picta commented on Thursday, February 19, 2015 4:46pm
ABSOLUTELY FRUSTRATING! Seriously! I had professionally pictures just taken of the kids clothes! I sell tons of onesies. This is pathetic, you should've at the very least emailed sellers that it was coming so we could get our orders through before you just yanked them away. This is just another check mark in the completely switching over to Redbubble's column. They treat sellers better and let us have more control over our designs.
DillonC commented on Friday, February 20, 2015 12:10am
Very disappointed. The kids' T shirts were very cool and individual. How come kids clothing isn't part of the long term vision, but shower curtains is?!
Rory Wood commented on Friday, February 20, 2015 11:23am
We can absolutely appreciate the frustration and inconvenience a discontinuation like this can cause. While that certainly was not the intent, I'd like to apologize for those inconveniences.

@EtotheDunks - admittedly that's a rough situation. From what I understand a member of our support team has been in touch to try and help out. I'll check in with him for an update but definitely let us know if there is anything else we can do.

@Harvey - there's a lot to discuss in your response, but because I enjoy brevity... yes. Alright, here's the long version. While a number of the products you listed aren't on our immediate radar, others are. Though it's worth mentioning, sometimes the best ideas aren't viable in an immediate timeframe for a number of reasons, typically related to quality. We won't produce something that doesn't meet our rigorous quality standards - a standpoint we're particularly proud of and something we feel sets us apart from others in the market. As for the asset management and upload process, this is absolutely an area we're addressing and look forward to sharing more about those updates as they coalesce.

@Canis - another really unfortunate scenario and I'll be reaching out personally to see what we can do to help.

@DillonC - Home decor clearly has a big appeal to the customer's we've attracted over the years and is an area we feel strongly differentiates us. Though it's never a great feeling to disappoint our members, we trust in time you'll experience the value of our decision.
parodyanimal commented on Saturday, February 21, 2015 6:19am
On a positive note, this is a good move from the point of view that not all designs available on S6 were suitable for children's clothing but there wasn't an option to restrict specific designs from this category.
dearantler commented on Saturday, February 21, 2015 11:48pm
This is disappointing, indeed -- especially considering the plethora of other product options available, many of which don't immediately indicate a long-term strategy is being followed by Society6 at all. The blog post is quite cryptic about why this decision was made. What is the real reason? The adult apparel options have been increasing regularly, so what's the big deal about keeping kids' apparel? Did someone get upset that content is not all rated G? If that's the case, then surely there's a way around it -- by having the artist opt in (or out) of including their designs on kids' apparel, and by having an approval process through Society6.
Charma Rose commented on Tuesday, February 24, 2015 10:44pm
This is truly disappointing. I was wondering why I wasn't getting onesies to show up and noticed them gone completely. I get the non-appropriate for kids/babies however I would think that it would make more sense to create a separate product entry for it. I had people interested in this option myself included and now it's just gone. I would kindly request a review of this as an option product again. Is the loss of revenue from this really worth displeasing your artists and potential customers? I get it if you were removing all clothing lines and just focusing on home decor.. but you're not..

Moonbird commented on Saturday, March 7, 2015 2:07am
Seems a shame to me - I had people interested in both kids t-shirts and baby clothes - why not have them as a separate category for artists that want to produce work for this market?
JoscarJoseph commented on Tuesday, March 10, 2015 7:04pm
Not cool, S6. Well, maybe it is. Oh well, I'm glad I got the six onesies for my daughter when I did. I guess I'll have to look elsewhere for a cool BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA toddler tee.

I opened my store recently and did not know it was possible to offer these products before ... would have been nice to try ... pity

Babies already get enough cool stuff. Good call, soc6. (:
...but now you mention it I kinda want scrunchies.
k234n commented on Sunday, April 19, 2015 7:52pm
this is the worst news! i am not one to ever leave an online comment, so you know it's bad when i feel the need to register to speak my piece. you had a great thing going on ... i am honestly stunned that this is a good move on your part. hope you bring back the child/kids options some day.... but if not, thanks for some great shirts over the past year! now i gotta go tell my kids not to spill $hit all over them.
Scalmato Studio commented on Wednesday, May 13, 2015 3:49pm
Sooo. that really sucks. I'm waiting for your "big upcoming products news" but will probably be switching to zazzle
Eric Peacock commented on Saturday, May 23, 2015 1:52pm
I'd suggest removing the highly indexed in search engine copy "Available in both Men's, Women's and Kid's styles and sizes." on the t-shirt product copy page.

Super frustrating and misleading.
alull commented on Thursday, May 28, 2015 7:07am
I was looking at Totoro stuff and wanted to buy a couple of t-shirts for my kids. really disappointed Society6 isn't carrying kids' clothes anymore.
Maria Knitten commented on Friday, May 29, 2015 11:28am

I used to love designing t-shirts for my kids. They liked showing off to their little friends that their papa had made their shirts. This is really depressing. I can't see how this is good for anyone, and your explanation raises more questions than it answers.
Dolores Ponder commented on Friday, September 18, 2015 12:59pm
I just had a baby and I love society6, the first thing I did when I was pregnant was buy some throw pillow covers and a wall tapestry for his room! I'm dying to get him some original onsies and shirts. Please bring back kids clothes!
YELLOW CAKE AND ICE CREAM commented on Wednesday, October 14, 2015 1:38pm
I want baby clothes!! You should take the option away in the uploads if they are not available! Pregnancy is in the air (I'm personally holding my breath) but there are a lot of chicks in my sphere of influence who aren't and would love my designs on their brats body!
River Darling commented on Wednesday, January 13, 2016 3:30pm
So disappointing!! I'd be buying my own work for my little one!
doctaj commented on Wednesday, January 20, 2016 9:56pm
Yeah, baby clothes < rectangle pillows... That makes sense.
matarua commented on Monday, January 25, 2016 12:27am
Absolutely gutted - recommended this to so many people who commented on our sons onesies and I could show personal style through him and the great artwork. Babies clothes are massed produced and to get something unique is such a great thing. Can't see how different shaped pillows can replace the precious memories of so many parents out there. I suppose my items I bought are now collectors items.

Very disappointed.
keith p. rein commented on Friday, February 5, 2016 9:41pm
i'm behind on this, but that goes to show how little S6 kept their sellers in the loop on their decisions.

i wish onesies and kids' shirts were still available, and i personally, don't sell many of them.
Taryn commented on Sunday, February 14, 2016 1:08pm
well that's a damn shame. I was coming back to order a kid shirt since the old one we have is too small now. one of my fave artists is on here too & not sure where to buy with their work now.

If they're not available anymore, why are they still listed under the options when you upload t-shirt designs?
Abominable Ink by Fazooli commented on Wednesday, April 27, 2016 6:23pm
^ WELL over a year later? No one updated that?
Johnny Go-Time commented on Wednesday, June 15, 2016 9:50am
Brutal - I've been waiting to post because I was sure you guys would reconsider this maddening decision.

Anyway - I have 2 kids and the main reason I loved Society6 was being able to get them unique shirts here.

Kids clothes were the thing that kept me coming back to Soc6 and eventually buying bigger things like Blankets and Wall Canvases...but now it's not worth my time to visit. From a business perspective, it's like if you guys were a grocery store and took out your Pharmacy Dept because it's not your "core vision". Well, fine, but everytime I came to get a prescription I also bought some food, and once in a while, a big-ticket item like a TV...but now there's nothing special about your store so I'll go to any old place instead. :(
