Wylie Styles

Having spent his youth divided between two parents, Wylie’s upbringing can be described as a harmonic clash of styles and cultures. On one end, he lived in the Bronx with his mother, which exposed him to hip-hop and street culture. On the other, he lived in the West and North sides of Chicago with his father, which gave him his start in street skating and honed his graffiti skills. He carried this hybrid of influences to Columbia College, where he gained a degree in Graphic Design.

Wylie worked as Creative Director for Leo Burnett Chicago and as Art Director on high-profile video game titles such as Need for Speed, Def Jam Icon, and Splinter Cell: Blacklist.

His work is a fusion of animated childhood memories and mental snapshots of after-school viewing sessions of Video Music Box, Yo! MTV Raps and RapCity. He takes this vivid memory-recall and blends it with ink smudges, acrylic smears, digital on canvas, and other found structures to create a reflection of the copy/paste, laptop’d, self-published, instant message world we call home.
