Seller Tips: Tagging & Descriptions

In this post, we'll discuss the importance of tagging and descriptions. Considering the effort you put into a single piece of artwork, it's only fair to give it the greatest opportunity to succeed. So, whether you're just starting out or a seasoned vet, these tips should help improve your chances to sell.

What are the best descriptions for my artwork?

Let's start by thinking like your buyer. A good description is anything that encourages another layer of emotional attachment to your artwork. Examples of this include anecdotes, history, poems, commentary, your process or anything interesting about the piece that your buyer can talk about in the real world.

Why are descriptions important?

Two reasons.

ONE // By giving your buyers the opportunity to become knowledgeable in your artwork, you encourage them to give you real-life promotions. You allow buyers to become passionate champions of your work.

Think of the person who has already bought your artwork on a new iPhone 6 case. When your buyer talks about their phone case (which goes everywhere), they have something unique to share regarding your work. Whoever is listening is more likely to find themselves at your shop because they already have a sense of your work.

TWO // SEO value or Search Engine Optimization value. This is a big one. Google rewards you for interesting descriptions. The more compelling your description, the more likely you'll appear in Google's results when buyers search for work like yours.

We don't expect you to be the next Robert Frost, but it is important to understand there is definitive value in giving your potential buyers something extra to latch onto. Ultimately, more eyes on your artwork means more chances to sell.

What's the difference between descriptions and tags?

A description is something interesting about your artwork.

A tag is a keyword indicating what is found in a piece of artwork. This is priority.

What are the best tags for my artwork?

Again, let's think like your buyer. Add tags that your buyer would want to search for. If your image, titled "Falling Down", is a digital illustration of a bearded skeleton falling off a skateboard with blue bones, add some tags like "skeleton, skateboard, comedy, humor, funny,  skater, skate or die, broken bones, blue, beard, digital illustration".

Add tags related to mood, color, genre of art, mediums used and anything that actually appears in the image. You can use multiple words per tag if you separate with a comma. We recommend a minimum of five tags per piece.

Separate your tags with a comma.

When your buyers search for something on Society6, our website is looking at your comma delineated tags. That's tech-talk for "use a comma to separate your tags for best results."

Why is tagging important?

By adding tags, your artwork becomes more discoverable - both on Society6 and Google. If your work is easier to find, it's more likely to be seen. The more eyes on your work, the greater your chances are of selling. Respectfully, we ask that you make this a priority when uploading as it helps us help you.

How do I add descriptions and tags to new artwork?

First, click on the "Sell" link at the top of the site. This is where you upload new prints.

Once you've uploaded your artwork, below the "Title of artwork" field, you'll see "Category" and "Add tags". Make sure to fill these out as thouroughly as possible.

Seller Tips: Tagging & Descriptions

Once you've added your title, tags and descriptions, click "Continue to create products" at the bottom of the page to activate products. From there, you're off to the races.

Seller Tips: Tagging & Descriptions

How do I update or edit my descriptions and tags?

Go to your Art Management page and locate the artwork you're interested in updating. Navigate to your product, then click on the vertical elipse and click "Edit info".

Seller Tips: Tagging & Descriptions

Update your descriptions and tags as described above. Again, we suggest adding tags below your description to give your buyer the best viewing experience. When you're done, click "Publish This".

In the end, the more attention you give to tags and descriptions, the more attention your artwork gets.

Great and informative post, I'm guilty of just tagging and not being descriptive about my work at all, will remember to do so next time :-)

Thanks for putting these tips together. I think a lot of people don't understand the importance of descriptions. Every time a new friend sees the amount of effort I put into mine their reaction is always something along the lines of 'wow, that was a waste of time. I'm not into descriptions'.

One thing I've noticed: I use a lot of commas in my arts' descriptions. It seems to cut off the descriptions and add elipses (...). I don't think the buyers/viewers are seeing my entire descriptions.
Obvious Warrior commented on Thursday, October 2, 2014 8:05am
Thank you for this article. I've learned (the hard way) that I was tagging my work through my perspective when I should be tagging from the buyers perspective.

s6 should consider one field for description and one field for tags, instead of a hard return and strings separated by commas. You could also mine those tags easier for trends and data. For example, look at tag functionality on RedBubble and SoundCloud.

Another tip: you can also use the description/tags field to add a unique hashtag that can simulate an album if people search S6 for that hashtag. For example, I have a lot of transit map-themed artwork, which all have the hashtag #transitmaps. If you enter that tag into S6's search box, only those artworks are shown. Neat!

(Of course, this hack relies on you using a unique hashtag that no one else has used!)
MLauxDesign commented on Tuesday, October 7, 2014 10:17am
I always added tidbits in my descriptions which served more like captions to follow my pieces, not keywords. I didn't want my description to look too cluttered with a bunch of words, but I will definitely add them now!

Hello, I have a question, why you didn't put one field for tags and another one for description? Could this be helpful for the artists when uploading an image and for the costumer to read better the descriptions instead of finding it mixed with keywords?
Thank you!
HippieChildTerra commented on Monday, May 11, 2015 2:04pm
I'm a little confused. Why do some peoples products in their store have a "About the Art" section with a description and no visible keywords, but other people only have the "Description" section show up with the keywords, in smaller, gray, italic print. I only see the one area to add a description and tags, plus the title section. What am I missing?

I'm not seeing where the descriptions show up. Where are they? I've tried looking at my page while signed-out, and others, but I haven't seen a description attached to a piece. And sometimes my tags don't work either. I just posted a new artwork about a week ago, today I thought to search the EXACT title of the piece on the Society6 site, and about eight posts popped up, but none of them were mine. That happens with a few of my pieces. I am loving what Society6 offers to artists, and am having so much fun creating products with my artwork. My only frustration is regarding the tags not bringing up my pieces. I can't tell if I'm doing something wrong, or if there is something not quite working with the site?
antipixel commented on Monday, August 19, 2019 7:50pm

Yeah, @Amy Norkitis and @antipixel, I cannot see the descriptions either. I put quite a lot of tags too, and the fact that my art rarely shows up is a little frustrating. If I search by my username (logged in or logged out) then, out of my (as of now) 28 designs, only coffee mugs, art prints, and stickers show. And one throw pillow. Is it because those three items are the most popular?

And I think that I need to give myself time to sell something, to maybe describe something well. Well, the most important thing is that I can't search for my store at all, not even by name, but only through the link. It doesn't exist at all, so I think that if I don't exist, that's why I can't find my products. Thank you for the answer regarding the products, but it did not solve my second problem.
