Mom And Dad Gift Guide: What To Buy The People Who Made You

In a time where everyone feels a little different, there's one thing we all have in common: parents. And now comes the dreaded time of year where you actually have to buy these people presents. My mom always says "Don't buy me anything! Having you as a child is a gift in and of itself!" which results in my immediate guilt for not finding the most thoughtful present on the planet. Meanwhile, my dad literally asks for No. 2 pencils and I feel that I cannot enable that incredibly boring desire. So, if you're like me and fully stumped on how to make your parents' holiday something special, look no further. We've put together a collection for dads and moms that'll make you forget gift cards, cardigans, and ties even existed.

Not sure what to buy your mom, dad, or any other new parents in your life? We consulted our friends Justin and Anabela for some parental wisdom.

Justin Broadbent is an award winning artist, designer, filmmaker (and cool dad) based in Toronto and Anabela Piersol is the lifestyle blogger (and new mom!) behind Fieldguided.

Who is your hardest person to shop for and why?

My dad, definitely. He's an entomologist (doctor of insects), checks the weather forecast every 10 minutes, and argues about how long to cook chicken (always too long). None of those interests translate very well into gifts, unfortunately. I keep trying to give him those "Mow The Lawn" coupons you make your parents when you're 12 and have no money, but I think he's starting to catch on.

What's your best tip for finding a gift for hard people to shop for?

Number 1. NO RE-GIFTING! I think it's important to give things that speak to your relationship with them. Tell them you love them, buy them a donkey, clean their fridge. I usually just take the person out for dinner, who doesn't love eating? No one, that's who.

Give us an example of the perfect gift.

My friend David Vertesi is not a dad yet, but he has a wicked album (I did the album art) called "Sad Dad Cruise Ship." I'd give him this phone case cuz it's the closest to SAD DAD. Also it's a RUN DMC rip, "Girls be cryin' cos I'm on TV / They even bother my poor father cos he's down with me."

And I'd buy this for my new born baby boy...cuz life.

Who is your hardest person to shop for and why?

The hardest person for me to shop for is my sister-in-law, who is a certified yoga teacher and wine enthusiast. Finding a gift for her is always a challenge because I care about her so much and I want to impress her! She's the closest thing that I have to a sister, our relationship is very important to me.

What's your best tip for finding a gift for hard people to shop for?

My best tip for finding a gift for people who are hard to shop for is to do some research. If the person has an active social media presence, you can use it for a little reconnaissance, since people tend to post things of a personal nature there, offering a glimpse into their tastes and interests. If the person has a Pinterest account, finding something appropriate will be a piece of cake. I also recommend putting your own taste aside, because it's not about you.

Give us an example of the perfect gift.

I think this phone case would be perfect for my sister-in-law. It's practical, it's cute, and when she looks at it she'll be reminded of one of her greatest passions, yoga!
