Daniel Coulmann is a graphic designer and artist from Hamburg. While creating his work mostly digitally, he finds his inspiration in the analog world and its techniques. Creating exclusive racing designs since 2016. Hi, as you may notice I have a passion for cars. From classic racing cars and the history of motorsports, to modern car culture. Cars are passion, in many ways! My shop consists of paintings from classic racing moments of Le Mans, to the Nürburgring or Japanese races. But also classic racing liverys. I work with the objects of my past, from pop culture to family photos, and fragment this imagery, similar to memory fragmentation. I erase the identities in family photos. I reproduce pieces of the past in markers, paint, and a printmaking process, in a balance of imprecision while attempting to maintain a level of control, similar to memory's attempts to reproduce events in an inherently flawed and personal way. Sometimes I pixelate these images, representing the simplified way the past exists in memory and the digital nature of contemporary life. My two fixations are memory and change, documenting my lifetime, beginning in the mid-70s. The 80s were my elementary and middle school years. Then the high school and college years of the 90s. In the 00s I was suddenly an adult artist attempting to make it on my own. The 10s are a balance of being a productive artist while also being a husband and parent. Bright colors. Max Headroom. The Incredible Hulk. Blade Runner. The Goonies. R.E.M. Boards of Canada. Unsolved Mysteries. The NES and early phases of digital technology. The early days of the internet. Small personal things and huge events like 9-11 and the Challenger explosion. Using memory and change as my main themes, I'm primarily concerned with mortality. Not the fear of death, but the fact that we know our time is limited. It makes us do a variety of things. Some of us try to hold onto and perhaps collect the past. Some come up with stories and explanations that deal with these circumstances, creating ideologies and belief systems. Some of us make paintings and drawings that document and attempt to understand the many pieces of what we are. I work out of my warehouse studio in Aiken, SC. I'm an ancient Asian art buff. An old man still looking towards the rising Sun. In my pieces I am reaching back to go forwards; my only wish: to indulge fully in the process of re-interpreting and remixing art... I am deeply inspired by the masters of Japanese Ukiyo-e painting, and aim with my pieces to convey a deeply evocative and somewhat reminiscent picture of a past both foreign and beautiful, where notions of time and enjoyment had very different connotations. For that I use both physical and digital mediums to reinterpret ancient pieces from old Japanese Masters of the art-form, some very well known and others anonymous and underground. Re-interpretating ancient art provides me with a freedom of expression that is not limited by genre or nomenclature, while remixing gives me a sense of connection to the past and the satisfaction of creation something new. The bulk of my work consists of investigating public domain ukiyo-e and then planning the piece before moving on to digital collage, drawing and painting on the final assemblage. Lastly I do post-treatment to bring out certain tones, and create a vintage mood. Seeing that my works are in essence derivative they are both loved and hated to equal proportions. Purists criticise and denounce my building on pre-existing pieces, more moderate and perhaps experimental folk identify with my perspective, and many art-lovers admire the resulting images.
