Description
A central octopus with undulating tentacles commands this ancient mosaic composition, surrounded by an intricate array of fish, crustaceans, and serpentine creatures rendered in cream, gold, rust, and charcoal tones against a dark ground. The densely packed arrangement creates a dynamic, almost chaotic marine tableau where each creature overlaps and interlocks, evoking the detailed naturalism and decorative abundance characteristic of Roman floor mosaics. At home in a classical study, an antiquarian library, or a space celebrating natural history and ancient art. Made to order by hand at our own Denver facility, it arrives as nine wood panels, each a half-inch thick with a keyhole on the back so it hangs easily. The natural grain shows through the artwork, so no two come out exactly alike.
