Bijou is a 6 year old calico persian cat. Three years ago she was rescued from a breeding facility by a wonderful cat rescue organization in Northwest Arkansas named Blue Moon Cat Sanctuary. They had her spayed and provided all her necessary veterinary care prior to adopting her out to a family. She had a good life with her family, however this past June she was attacked by a large breed dog. The family immediately took her to the emergency veterinary clinic. She had neck and spinal trauma and was not expected to live. Against all odds, she pulled through, but was unable to walk. Her owners took her home and she began slowly recovering. Over the next few months she began walking again, but it was very slow and painful. Due to their work schedules, they made the difficult decision to find her a home where someone was available most of the time as all she really wanted to do was sit in a lap and be loved. Enter Sally. Sally works for the Humane Society of the Ozarks and when she received the call about Bijou she knew she had to rescue her. After taking her home as a temporary foster, Sally and her husband Doug fell in love with Bijou and decided they would adopt her. Sally has a penchant for bringing home the animals with special needs. Bijou continues to improve, but has many problems associated with the spinal trauma and her lower spine not working well. She walks in an awkward, slow gait. She has also had her front claws removed at some point and has arthritis from that. She requires frequent vet visits due to a tendency to have bladder problems. She is on 3 supplements to help with her pain and inflammation and she is on a high quality grain free food. Every night Sally mixes her supplements with anchovy paste, her favorite treat and hand feeds them to her.
Our veterinarian is hopeful Bijou will continue to improve in our nurturing environment. She has our other 2 rescue cats and our 3 small, friendly rescue dogs for company. One of the other cats and one of the dogs also have special needs and require special food. Bijou is generous and says we can use any extra profit from her shop for the other rescue critters in our care.
