Yesterday we shared about our upcoming event with Uber and talked to featured artist Liz Brizzi, and today we wanted to catch up with another Los Angeles artist that'll be part of the project celebrating Society6 and Uber driver-partner artists.

BIOWORKZ is a long time member of the Society6 community and you'll immediately recognize his distinctive and intricate mosaic patterns he meticulously shapes into wildlife.

His client list is stacked with projects for the likes of Converse, Redbull, Disney and many more. We caught up with him to learn a bit about his origins and motivations.

Where are you from originally?

I was born in Taipei, Taiwan, but I came to America when I was 4 so I don't have many memories of Taiwan. I lived in Alhambra, CA most of my life so I consider myself American because I'm very detached from the Taiwanese culture. I do love Taiwanese food, I can't get enough of it.

What brought you to Los Angeles?

My parents immigrated to LA to be near our family and to give my sister and I a better life.

When did you start making art? What is your earliest memory of creating?

I've been drawing since I was a little kid around 5 years old. I remember laying flat on the floor doodling on scrap pieces of paper while my parents were watching TV. I was doing this for several hours everyday for many years. I remember the excitement I would feel when I found stacks of junk mail that was printed on one side because I could use the blank side on the back to draw.

What themes do you gravitate towards with your work?

I currently love drawing ornately decorated animals. I sometimes stray from this theme and draw skulls because I just love the way skulls look. At this point in my career, I'm interested in dabbling with various themes but will likely always make it ornate.

How would you describe your work?

I like to call it "ornate". It seems to be the most apt description.

What message or description is your work getting across?

I don't have a message. There's enough noise in our lives whether it be politics, gossip, advertisements, and so on. My purpose is to create artwork that people love to hopefully draw them in to take a deeper look into all the ornate patterns - something pretty and engaging. I can't compare my artwork to the beauty of a sunset, but does a sunset have a message or is it just something beautiful to look at?

What are you inspired by?

I'm definitely inspired by animals. Lately, I've been inspired by the fact that I get to make a living creating artwork. Creating art has been such a big part of my life that I don't think "inspired" describes it fully. Art has been there for me through thick and thin, and it has given me a purpose in life. So whether I am inspired or not, I will always be creating artwork. It's in my DNA.

Do other artists inspire you; and curiously, which ones?

I like to refer to him as the "Godfather of Ornate", Iain MacArthur. When I first saw his work, it lit a spark in my mind. He was a heavy influence for what I do now. Another great Ornate artist is Tony Graystone aka "Sneaky Studios". They both do superb work and watching them evolve as artists has forced me to get better too.

Beyond this opportunity, what has happened or come about from being a part of Society6?

I think Society6 is the pioneer of the POD (Print on Demand) business model. When I uploaded my first piece of artwork, I didn't expect much because it was all new to me. But I think Society6 put my artwork on the map, especially with my Ornate Elephant drawing. I started getting lots of attention for this piece. On top of it all, it's nice to have passive income from being part of S6.
